Slough: Published by D.r W. Herschel 1 Feby 1794, 1794, printed 1976
Single sheet engraving, image 228 x 231mm; plate mark 250 x 252mm; leaf 257 x 274mm. Slight spotting.
This was Herschel’s favourite telescope, with which he began observing in 1783 and rebuilt with his son John in 1820. This is one of the impressions from the original plate, printed by Will and Sebastian Carter, advertised as a Christmas gift in the Journal History of Science, (Vol 14, pt. 1, September 1976), the original copperplate having recently been re-discovered. The plate is described as having been ‘expertly restored and unblemished prints have been pulled on specially selected Barcham Green mould-made paper’.
